Page Views, Impressions, and Streams: Bots in Media

Media pays for units it cannot physically inspect. When the unit is synthetic, the whole valuation chain inherits the lie.

Media monetizes counts: page views, impressions, streams. Each is a proxy for a human moment of attention, and each is trivially manufacturable. A synthetic page view is indistinguishable from a real one at the server. Both are just a logged request.

The SoundCloud era of synthetic audio plays made the mechanics vivid. If a "stream" is a counted event, and the count triggers a payout, then the rational move for a bad actor is to generate counted events as cheaply as possible. The content is incidental; the counter is the target.

“When the payout is attached to the count and not the listener, you are not selling music. You are selling a number.”

This is why "The Bots Continue to Steal Christmas" every year: seasonal ad budgets inflate the payout per counted event, and the synthetic supply floods in to meet it. The defense is not a better counter. It is decoupling value from raw volume and re-anchoring it to verified human attention.
